Amud man

A Neanderthal (archaic man) from the late Pleistocene period discovered in the Amud Cave in Israel by a Tokyo University research team led by Suzuki Hisashi from 1961 to 1964. Skeleton No. 1 is an adult male approximately 178cm tall, and almost the entire skeleton has been found. Other remains include a skull fragment and free teeth. As it has characteristics similar to both European Neanderthals and fossil modern humans, it is believed to be a human who was in the transitional stage from the archaic to the modern humans. It is associated with a Middle Paleolithic culture.

イスラエルのアムッド洞窟から 1961～64年に鈴木尚を団長とする東京大学調査団により発見された更新世後期のネアンデルタール人 (旧人) 。1号人骨は身長約 178cmの成人男性でほぼ全身骨格が見つかっている。ほかに頭骨片と遊離歯がある。ヨーロッパのネアンデルタール人と化石新人類の両者に似た特徴をあわせもっているので，旧人類から新人類への移行過程にあった人類とみられている。中期旧石器文化を伴う。
