1739?-1811 Yugoslav writer, philosopher, and educator. Serbia's greatest enlightenment thinker. During his time as a monk in Dalmatia (1761-71), he studied ancient literature and Byzantine culture. After returning to secular life, he stayed in Vienna, Paris, London, and other cities, learning the most advanced knowledge in Europe at the time, which he used to educate the Serbian people after their liberation. He was active in many areas, including serving as Serbian Minister of Education and founding a university in Belgrade, but the turbulent first half of his life is detailed in his autobiography, Life and Adventures (1783, 1788).
