A small city in Boyaca Department in central Colombia. Population: about 30,000. The town was founded in 1586 on the west bank of the Suarez River, at an altitude of 2,550m, on the site of an indigenous settlement. Since 1567, emeralds have been mined in open cut at the nearby Muzo Mine. Since colonial times, the town has also been known for the miracles of the statue of the Virgin Mary of the Rosary, and many pilgrims visit the town in December, making it known as the religious capital. There is also a small but traditional dairy industry. [Kamitani Hiroshi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
