When a stereoisomeric reactant gives a stereoisomeric product, the phenomenon in which a specific stereoisomer gives a specific stereoisomer is called stereospecific, and such a process is called a stereospecific process. According to this definition, different stereoisomers of the reactants give different stereoisomers of the product. A typical example is the Walden inversion. The addition of bromine to an alkene is stereospecific. In other words, in the addition of bromine to the geometric isomers of 2-butene, the trans isomer stereospecifically gives meso-2,3-dibromobutane, and the cis isomer stereospecifically gives (±)-2,3-dibromobutane.
