Jogakuji Temple

Japanese: 定額寺 - じょうがくじ

A type of temple status in the Nara and Heian periods. 500-1000 bundles of rice were provided by the state, and the interest was used as fuel for the lamp, with an annual taxpayer. Its origin is thought to date back to the 9th year of the Tenmu era (680), when the temples' food tax was inspected and the temples' names were determined. The purpose was to correct the problem of the proliferation of private temples and to impose national control. In the 1st year of Tenpyo Shoho (749), the land area of reclamation for Jogakuji temples was set at 100 cho. After the 9th century, the number of Jogakuji temples gradually increased, and by the end of the 10th century there were as many as 60. There was almost no Honganji temple of a prince or minister that was not a Jogakuji temple. With the collapse of the Ritsuryo system, state benefits became unavailable, and no one applied for them.

奈良，平安時代の寺格の一種。 500～1000束の灯分稲が国から支給され，これを出挙してその利息を灯油料とし年分度者をおいた。その起源は天武9 (680) 年，諸寺の食封の点検を行なって寺の名を定めたことにあると思われる。その目的は私寺濫造の弊を正し，国家統制を加えることにあった。天平勝宝1 (749) 年定額寺の墾田は 100町と定められた。9世紀以後，定額寺の数は次第に増加し 10世紀末頃には 60ヵ寺にものぼった。親王，大臣らの本願寺で定額寺でないものはないほどであった。律令制の崩壊とともに国家の恩典が得られなくなると，申請する者もなくなった。
