The main types of forest soil in Japan are podzols under spruce and todo fir forests in Hokkaido and under dwarf pine forests in the high mountains of Honshu, brown forest soil under beech forests, yellow-brown soil under chinquapin forests, and red soil under serrata forests. Of these, brown forest soils account for the majority of forest soils in Japan, and are further divided into dry brown forest soils, wet brown forest soils, etc., depending on the difference between wetness and dryness.
