Born: March 7, 1678, Messina Died January 31, 1736. Madrid. Italian architect and stage designer. Son of a goldsmith, he went to Rome in 1703 to study under C. Fontana, but in contrast to Fontana's preference for simplicity, he preferred richly decorated architecture. In 1705 he became a member of the Academy of San Luca in Rome, and was active in Rome and northern Italy. In 1714 he moved to Turin as architect for the King of Sicily, and designed the palace of the Duke of Savoy. In 1735 he was invited by King Philip V of Spain to design the Palacio Real in Madrid. His later works are known as representative examples of the early Italian Rococo style. His major works include the Palazzo Madama (1718-21) and the Carmine Basilica in Turin (1732-35).
