Shaoguan

A prefecture-level city in the north of Guangdong Province, China. It governs three city districts (Qujiang, Wujiang, and Zhuojiang), four counties, and one autonomous county, and acts as the governing agent for two county-level cities (Lechang and Nanxiong) (as of 2016). Population: 3,264,900 (2012). It is located at the confluence of the Wu River and Zhu River, the source of the Beijiang River in the Pearl River system, along the Beijing-Guang Line. It is an important transportation hub between the three provinces of Guangdong, Hunan, and Jiangxi, and is an old town that dates back to the Han dynasty. There are iron and coal mines nearby, and the city is thriving in industries such as steel, machinery, electrical equipment, and chemicals. Within the city, there is Fengcai Tower, and on the outskirts, there is the Nanhua Temple and the tomb of Zhang Jiuling, a famous Tang Dynasty minister.At Lion Rock, a scenic spot in Qujiang District, fossilized human bones from the late Pleistocene era known as the Baba man have been discovered.

中国、広東(カントン)省北部の地級市。曲江(きょくこう)、武江(ぶこう)、湞江(ていこう)の3市轄区、4県と1自治県を管轄し、楽昌(らくしょう)、南雄(なんゆう)の2県級市の管轄代行を行う（2016年時点）。人口326万4900（2012）。珠江(しゅこう)水系の北江の源流である武水と湞水(とうすい)の合流点に位置し、京広線に沿う。広東、湖南(こなん)、江西(こうせい)3省の交通の要衝で、漢代から開けた古い町である。付近に鉄鉱山や炭坑があり、鉄鋼業を中心に機械、電機、化学などの工業が盛んである。市内に風采楼(ふうさいろう)、郊外に南華禅寺や唐代の名臣張九齢(ちょうきゅうれい)の墓があり、曲江区の名勝獅子岩(ししいわ)では、馬壩(ばは)人とよばれる更新世後期の化石人骨が発見されている。
