Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano - San Giovanni in Laterano (English)
A cathedral in Rome that was founded in early Christian times. In 313, Emperor Constantine the Great donated the Lateran Palace as a residence for the Archbishop of Rome, and a basilica was built there. Only parts of the original building remain, and the current basilica was almost entirely remodeled in the 17th century by Borromini and others. The appearance before the reconstruction can be seen in the murals of the Church of San Martino ai Monte in Rome. The attached Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte was originally circular, but was remodeled to an octagonal plan by Pope Sixtus III (reigned 432-440).
