Henry's law

This law was discovered in 1803 by the British W. Henry, and is related to the solubility of gases in liquids. It is expressed as "the volume of gas that dissolves in liquid is constant regardless of pressure" or "the saturated solubility of gas is proportional to pressure." It is known that this law holds true with a fair degree of approximation for real gases as long as the concentration and pressure are not too high.

This can also be derived thermodynamically from the ideal gas law, but by combining Henry's law and Boyle's law, we can derive the law that "the gas concentration ratio between the gas phase and the liquid phase in equilibrium is constant." This is called the partition law.

1803年、イギリスのW・ヘンリーにより発見された、気体の液体に対する溶解度に関する法則。「圧力によらず気体が液体に溶解する体積は一定である」あるいは「気体の飽和溶解度は圧力に比例する」という表現がとられる。実在の気体に関しても、濃度や圧力があまり大きくない範囲においてはかなりの近似で成立することがわかっている。

　理想気体の法則から、熱力学的に導くこともできるが、このヘンリーの法則とボイルの法則を組み合わせると、「平衡にある気相と液相との間における気体の濃度比は一定である」という法則が導ける。これは分配の法則partition lawあるいは分配律という。
