Died September 22, 1688. French physician and traveller in Paris. Born into a middle-class peasant family in the Anjou region, he travelled to the European continent as a young man. He studied under philosopher P. Gassendi. In 1652, he obtained his medical doctorate from the University of Montpellier. In 1656, he travelled to Egypt, and stayed in India from 1657/8 to 1667/8. He witnessed the struggle for the throne during the final years of Shah Jahan's reign, and was close to the court of Emperor Aurangzeb during the early years of his reign. After returning to France, he published a record of his travels, Voyages de François Bernier (4 volumes, 1670-71).
