Chevalier - Maurice Chevalier

French chanson singer and film actor. Born in Ménilmontant, Paris. He began singing professionally at the age of 13, and became a star in revues in his 20s. He was briefly married to Mistinguett after playing the role of her partner at the Folies Bergère. He also appeared in films from an early age, but from 1928 to 1935 he went to America, where he starred in operettas such as "Love Me tonight" (1932) and "The Merry Widow" (1934), becoming an international star. After returning to France, he continued to perform on stage and in films, and although he held his retirement performance as a singer in 1956, he continued to work mainly in films, mainly in America. He was a typical chanson fantégist, and was popular for his unique laugh and his trademark smoking and boater hat. He gave a farewell recital at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in August 1968, and died in Paris on January 1, 1972.

フランスのシャンソン歌手、映画俳優。パリのメニルモンタン生まれ。13歳からプロの歌手として歌い始め、20代でレビューのスターとなり、フォリー・ベルジェールでミスタンゲットの相手役を勤めたことから一時彼女と結ばれた。映画にも早くから出演しているが、1928～35年にはアメリカに渡り、『今晩は愛して頂戴(ちょうだい)な』（1932）、『メリー・ウィドー』（1934）などのオペレッタ映画に活躍、国際的スターとなった。帰仏後も、舞台と映画に華やかに活躍し、56年に歌手としての引退興行は行ったが、その後も主としてアメリカで映画出演を中心に活躍を続けた。彼はシャンソン・ファンテジストの典型で、独特の笑いと、スモーキングにカンカン帽姿をトレードマークに人気を博した。68年8月、シャンゼリゼ座で告別リサイタルを行い、72年1月1日パリで没。
