An island located off the northwest coast of the Nishisonogi Peninsula in western Nagasaki Prefecture. It is the main island of the four islands that make up Sakito Town, Nishisonogi County. It has an area of 4.84 km2 and a population of 1,691 (1995). In 1907, the Sakito Coal Mine, an undersea coalfield, was developed and at its peak produced over one million tons of coal per year, but it closed in 1968 due to the energy revolution. Current industries include fishing and salt production, which began in 1956. This was originally created as a by-product of the coal industry, but has now been transformed into a salt factory using ion exchange membranes.
