A city on the west coast of Chita Peninsula, Aichi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is served by the Meitetsu Tokoname Line and the Airport Line. It is a pottery city famous for Tokoname ware, which originated in the mid-Heian period. It produces architectural ceramics, sanitary ware, ceramic pipes, pots, flower vases, tea utensils, etc., and accounts for about 40% of the city's manufacturing shipments (2003). Chita cotton is a specialty of the rural areas. The Aichi Irrigation Canal runs through the city, and mandarin oranges and vegetables are also cultivated. Ono in the north was a base for cargo ships to Edo and Osaka in the early modern period. There is a yacht harbor and a swimming beach on the coast of Ise Bay. Chubu Centrair International Airport opened offshore in February 2005, making it the air gateway to the Tokai region. It has an area of 55.89 ^km2 . Population: 54,858 (2010).

愛知県知多半島西岸の市。1954年市制。名鉄常滑線および空港線が通じる。平安時代中期に起源をもつ常滑焼で有名な窯業都市で，建築陶器，衛生陶器，陶管，鉢類，花器，茶器等を生産し，市の製造品出荷額の約４割（2003）を占めている。農村部では知多木綿を特産。愛知用水が通じ，ミカン，野菜の栽培も盛んである。北部の大野は近世江戸，大坂への回船の本拠地であった。伊勢湾岸にヨットハーバーや海水浴場がある。沖合には2005年２月に中部国際空港（セントレア）が開港，東海地方における空の玄関口となる。55.89km²。５万4858人（2010）。
