Official name: Republic of Vanuatu Area: 12,189 km2 Population (1996): 170,000 Capital: Vila (Time difference with Japan: +2 hours) Main languages: Bislama, English, French Currency: Vatu Independent country in the southwest Pacific Ocean. The New Hebrides Islands, jointly administered by the United Kingdom and France, are a Y-shaped chain of islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean between 13° and 21° south latitude and 166° and 171° east longitude. In 1980, the islands gained independence and became the Republic of Vanuatu.

The New Hebrides are made up of over 80 islands, large and small, the main ones being, from north to south, the Torres Islands, Banks Islands, Espiritu Santo (the largest island, 112 km long and 72 km wide), Maewo, Aoba, Pentecost, Malekula, Ambrym, Epi, Efate, Eromanga, Tanna, and Anaityum.
