When the temperature is close to 0°C on sloping land, snow blocks that have fallen from tree branches and other objects can roll over the snow surface and turn into round, rolled-up disks or cylindrical snow blocks. This is the phenomenon known as yukimakuri, which occurs on flat land when the temperature suddenly rises to around 0°C after snow has fallen and a strong wind blows, causing the snow to roll over like a nori roll. The largest can be several tens of centimeters in diameter and width. They are often seen in snowy regions where strong winds often blow, such as the Shonai Plain in Yamagata Prefecture, and are also called tawarayuki or yukidawara because their shape resembles a rice sack.
