...The upper reaches of the river are a scenic spot in the Kahadakyo Prefectural Natural Park, with its beautiful valleys as its centerpiece, and are a mountainous region where forestry is the main industry. The upper reaches, known as the Kawamata Valley, have been known since early modern times as a producer of Ise tea. The lower reaches are the Ise Plains, a producer of Ise rice, and were once the producers of Matsusaka cotton, which was the basis of the activities of Ise merchants.
