An organization whose main objectives are to commemorate the souls of fallen soldiers, to collect remains, and to provide welfare for surviving families. The predecessor of the Japan War-Bereaved Families Association, the largest association for surviving families in Japan, was the Japan War-Bereaved Families Welfare Federation, which was formed on November 17, 1947 (Showa 22). The federation worked to restore military pensions and improve support measures for surviving families. On April 30, 1977, the Act on Assistance to Families of War-Wounded, Sick and Dead Soldiers was promulgated and military pensions were restored, and the federation continued to expand its activities, calling for an expansion of the quota for surviving families and an increase in the amount of payments. On March 11, 1978, it became the Japan War-Bereaved Families Association Incorporated Foundation (the first chairman was former Minister of Health and Welfare Hashimoto Ryugo), and became a large organization with sub-organizations in all prefectures.
