Youth hostel (English spelling)

Japanese: ユース･ホステル（英語表記）youth hostel

Simple, clean, inexpensive accommodation for young people on foot or bicycle trips. The purpose is to provide young people with opportunities to experience nature and to interact with each other regardless of nationality, race, or religion. Youth hostels were born against the backdrop of the Wandervogel (migratory bird) movement that began in Germany at the end of the 19th century. The first person to propose the establishment of youth hostels was German elementary school teacher Richard Schirrmann (1874-1961), who came up with the idea in 1909 of converting elementary school classrooms during vacations into accommodation for students on foot trips.

青少年の徒歩旅行，自転車旅行のための，簡素，清潔，廉価な宿泊施設。青少年に，自然との触合いや，国籍，人種，宗教などを超えた相互交流の機会を提供することを目的としている。ユース･ホステルは，ドイツで19世紀末に始まったワンダーフォーゲル(渡り鳥)運動を背景として生まれた。ユース･ホステルの整備を最初に提唱したのは，ドイツ人の小学校教師シルマンRichard Schirrmann(1874‐1961)で，1909年，生徒の徒歩旅行の宿泊場所として，休暇中の小学校の教室を転用することを思いついたのがきっかけであった。
