An illustrated commentary of the Old and New Testaments compiled in France in the 13th century. It is made up of over 5,000 symbolic images. It displays a complex iconography not found in the stained glass or reliefs of medieval cathedrals, and every verse of the Old and New Testaments is interpreted allegorically. For example, in "Creation of the World," the figures of the earth-growing reptiles, birds waving in the sky, and large fish devouring small fish are paired with the figures of farmers plowing, clergy, and kings on thrones. At first glance, the two figures seem unrelated, but in fact they are interpreted in a correlation between the "actives," "contemplatives," and "earthly authorities" of the earth.
