Shinjo [village] - Shinjo

Japanese: 新庄[村] - しんじょう

A village in Maniwa County, northern Okayama Prefecture. Population 1,101 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Shinjo River, a tributary of the Asahi River, most of the village area is mountainous, part of the backbone of the Chugoku Mountains. The central settlement, Shinjo, is a post town along the Izumo Kaido (currently National Route 181), and has long flourished as a distribution center for Shinjo beef. In the past, tatara ironworking was popular here, and the area's name, blacksmith, remains. Cattle are grazed on the bare mountains left after firewood and charcoal for ironworking have been cut, and until recently, they were also used for grazing on harvested rice fields. Forestry is thriving here, and beef cattle are raised, dairy farmed, and shiitake mushrooms and vegetables are grown.

岡山県北部，真庭郡の村。人口1101(1995)。旭川の支流新庄川最上流域に位置し，村域の大部分は中国山地脊梁部の山地である。中心集落の新庄は出雲街道(現，国道181号線)沿いの宿場町で，古くから新庄牛の集散地として栄えた。かつてはたたら製鉄が盛んで，鍛冶屋の字名が残る。製鉄用の薪炭を切り出した後のはげ山に牛が放牧され，また近年まで刈田放牧が行われた。林業が盛んで，肉牛飼育や酪農，シイタケ･野菜などの栽培が行われる。
