A former town in Isumi County in the southeastern part of Chiba Prefecture. It occupies the lowlands at the mouth of the Isumi River and is served by the Sotobo Line. It produces rice, vegetables, and fruit. The fishing industry is active, with octopus, sea bream, and flounder being landed here. The coastline, including Cape Taito, is part of the Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park. In December 2005, it merged with Isumi Town and Ohara Town in Isumi County to become a city, Isumi City. 千葉県南東部,夷隅(いすみ)郡の旧町。夷隅川河口の低地を占め,外房線が通じる。米,野菜,果樹を産する。漁業では,タコ,タイ,ヒラメなど水揚が盛ん。太東(たいとう)崎など海岸は南房総国定公園の一部。2005年12月,夷隅郡夷隅町,大原町と合併し市制,いすみ市となる。46.66km2。1万5191人(2003)。
