A town in Takaoka County in the western part of Kochi Prefecture. It occupies the upper reaches of the Tonohara River, a tributary of the Shimanto River, and is mostly mountainous. There are extensive forests and forestry is practiced. Eggplants, shishito peppers, and shiitake mushrooms are produced, and livestock is also practiced. Tea is a specialty of the town.
