A culture from the late 5th millennium BC to the middle of the 4th millennium BC based on the 14th to 6th floors (Uruk period) of the Eanna district of Uruk, the largest city ruins of the Sumerian civilization in southern Mesopotamia. Characterized by the prevalence of red and gray polished pottery, wheel-thrown inscribed and uninscribed pottery, metal products such as weapons and containers, and the appearance of cylindrical seals. Elegant and huge temples such as mosaic column temples, sacred towers and ziggurats with stepped bases, and the White Temple appeared, forming a city that was more developed than the preceding Ubaid culture.

メソポタミア南部におけるシュメール文明最大の都市遺跡であるウルクUrukのエアンナ地区14層〜６層（ウルク期）を標準とする前５千年紀後半〜前４千年紀中ごろの文化。赤色・灰色磨研土器やろくろ製の刻文・無文土器，武器・容器などの金属製品の盛行，円筒印章の出現が特徴。モザイク円柱神殿，階段状の基壇をもつ聖塔・ジッグラト，白神殿など装麗・巨大な神殿が出現し，先行するウバイド文化より発展した都市が形成される。
