It is the second largest island in the Sulu Archipelago in the southern Philippines after Basilan Island. Its area is 893 km2. The highest peak is Mount Tumatangas (812m above sea level) in the west, and small cone-shaped volcanoes tower all over the island. It is inhabited mainly by the Tausog people, who are semi-farmers and semi-fishermen, and the coastal areas by the Samar people, who are skilled at living on the sea. It has long been the political and trade center of the Sulu Sea area. It was not until the 20th century that it came under the control of Manila. Together with the surrounding islands, it constitutes Sulu Province, and the town of Jolo on the northwest coast of the island is the provincial capital (population 52,429).
