Bloom, Allan

Japanese: ブルーム(英語表記)Bloom, Allan
Bloom, Allan
Born: September 14, 1930 in Indianapolis, Indiana
[Died] October 7, 1992. Chicago American philosopher and author. He studied under German-born political philosopher Leo Strauss at the University of Chicago and devoted himself to the study of Western classics. He was a professor at the University of Chicago, Yale University, and Cornell University, and also taught at universities abroad, including Israel and France. He is known for his best-selling book The Closing of the American Mind: How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy and Impoverished the Souls of Today's Students (1987), and for translating works by Plato and Rousseau. In 1969, students at Cornell University occupied the university's headquarters, demanding that some required courses be eliminated and that courses that were "relevant" to them be introduced, but he resigned in frustration at the university's failure to give in. In his book, Bloom sharply criticizes universities for no longer teaching students how to think. He cites flawed curricula, the harmful influence of rock music and television, and academic elitism as causes of the education crisis.
