Spanish novelist. Active as a radical politician, he served as a Republican deputy seven times, but also endured many hardships, including imprisonment and exile. His early works, such as The Peasant House (1898) and Reeds and Mud (1902), which vividly depict the hardships of the lives of farmers and fishermen, are local novels set in his hometown of Valencia. In his middle period, the setting shifted to Madrid and other places, and he wrote works such as Blood and Sand (1908), which deals with the rise and fall of bullfighters. His later works are set abroad, such as Our Sea (1918), which deals with a naval battle in World War I.

スペインの小説家。急進的な政治家として活躍し，共和党の代議士を前後7回にわたって務めたが，入獄や亡命の苦労も多く味わった。農民や漁民の苦しい生活を活写した《百姓家》(1898)，《葦と泥》(1902)など，前期の作品は故郷バレンシアを舞台にした郷土小説である。中期はマドリードなどに舞台が移り，闘牛士の盛衰を扱った《血と砂》(1908)などがある。後期の作品では舞台は国外にも及び，第1次大戦の海戦を扱った《われらの海》(1918)などがある。
