1867‐1928 Spanish novelist. Active as a radical politician, he served as a Republican deputy seven times, but also endured many hardships, including imprisonment and exile. His early works, such as The Peasant House (1898) and Reeds and Mud (1902), which vividly depict the hardships of the lives of farmers and fishermen, are local novels set in his hometown of Valencia. In his middle period, the setting shifted to Madrid and other places, and he wrote works such as Blood and Sand (1908), which deals with the rise and fall of bullfighters.
