The fourth monarch of the Timurid dynasty in Western Asia. Reigned 1447-49. Grandson of Timur and son of Shah Rukh. Ruled the region of Samarkand in his father's place. He was a skilled scholar, especially in astronomy. Around 1420, he built a large observatory on the eastern outskirts of Samarkand, and based his observations there he compiled astronomical tables, including the positions of 1,018 fixed stars. After Shah Rukh's death, the country fell into turmoil, and Ulugh Beg was killed by assassins hired by his son, which led to the rapid decline of the Timurid dynasty.

西アジアのティムール朝の第4代君主。在位1447‐49年。ティムールの孫でシャー･ルフの子。父に代わってサマルカンド地方を支配したが，すぐれた学者であり，ことに天文学に詳しかった。1420年ごろサマルカンドの東郊に大天文台を建設し，ここで行った観測を基礎に天文表を作った。これには1018個の恒星の位置観測が含まれている。シャー･ルフの没後，国内は乱れ，ウルグ･ベクはその子が雇った刺客の手にかかって殺され，それとともにティムール朝は急速に衰えた。
