1394‐1449 The fourth monarch of the Timurid dynasty in Western Asia. Reigned 1447-49. Grandson of Timur and son of Shah Rukh. Ruled the region of Samarkand in his father's place. He was a skilled scholar, especially in astronomy. Around 1420, he built a large observatory on the eastern outskirts of Samarkand, and based his observations there he compiled astronomical tables, including the positions of 1,018 fixed stars. After Shah Rukh's death, the country fell into turmoil, and Ulugh Beg was killed by assassins hired by his son, which led to the rapid decline of the Timurid dynasty.
