It has a tuberous root with a palmately divided tip. The flower stalk is 10-40 cm tall and bears 3-6 leaves. The leaves are oblanceolate, 7-15 cm long, and the upper leaves are smaller. From June to August, it produces a dozen or so dense reddish purple flowers. Each flower is just over 1 cm in diameter. The sepals open, the lip has dark reddish purple markings, and is three-lobed with a pointed tip. It has a somewhat thick spur of about 15 mm. It grows in the alpine zone north of central Honshu, in eastern and northern Hokkaido, in flat marshes and grasslands, and is distributed on the Pacific coast from Alaska to Japan, and in East Asia from Alaska to the Sea of ​​Japan coast of Korea. ...
