...A reddish purple terrestrial orchid commonly found in wet flower fields in the alpine to subalpine zones. The name Hakusan comes from Mt. Hakusan in Ishikawa Prefecture. It has a tuberous root with a palmately divided tip. The flower stalk is 10-40 cm tall and bears 3-6 leaves. The leaves are oblanceolate, 7-15 cm long, and the upper leaves are smaller. From June to August, it produces a dozen or so dense reddish purple flowers. Each flower is just over 1 cm in diameter. The sepals open, the lip has dark reddish purple markings, and is three-lobed with a pointed tip. It has a somewhat thick spur of about 15 mm.
