Cochabamba (English spelling)
The capital of Cochabamba Department in central Bolivia. It is located about 230 km east-southeast of La Paz, in the Cochabamba Basin in the eastern Andes Mountains, at an altitude of about 2,500 m. It was founded by the Spaniards in 1574. It is the center of the fertile basin and distributes potatoes, corn, wheat, fruits, and vegetables produced in the surrounding area. A pipeline runs from the Camiri oil field, about 400 km southeast, and oil refining is active in the city. Industries such as textiles, tobacco, leather products, furniture, soap, beer, and canned fruit are also located in the city. It is also a cultural center, and the city is home to the University of San Simon (1832), a museum, a library, and a cathedral. It is also known as a tourist and health resort destination due to its mild climate and beautiful scenery. The Cochabamba Basin is the most densely populated region in the country, and the city is currently the third largest city in the country after La Paz and Santa Cruz, with satellite cities such as Vinto, Quiacoyo, Sipe-Sipe, and Sacaba in the surrounding area.
