Representative figures include the 6th-century Egyptian hermit Symeōn Salos, and the 10th-century Scythian Andreas Salos of Constantinople, famous for the legend that the Virgin Mary appeared to him while he was praying. In addition, Christians had a custom of showing sympathy and respect to the mentally retarded and insane, regarding them as messengers of God, and so it was possible for such monks to live a life of wandering from place to place. …
