Estuary Barrage (Estuary Barrage)

Japanese: 河口ぜき(河口堰) - かこうぜき

A weir constructed near the mouth of a river has the main purpose of preventing saltwater from going upstream during dry periods, as well as developing new water resources. Although it differs from a tide-blocking weir, which only prevents saltwater from going upstream, and a flood control weir, which is primarily intended to prevent high tides, an estuary weir can also be used to protect against high tides. The reason that an estuary weir can develop new water resources is that it can convert maintenance water secured for purposes such as preventing salt damage into new water uses. For example, in the case of the Tone River Estuary Weir (completed in 1971), of the 50 m ³ /s of maintenance water needed downstream of the Tone River to prevent salt damage and maintain the estuary, 20 m ³ /s was diverted for drinking water and industrial use in Tokyo, Saitama Prefecture, and Chiba Prefecture.

河川の河口付近に造られるせき(堰)で，渇水時期に塩水が遡上するのを防止するとともに，新たに水資源を開発することに主目的がある。塩水の遡上のみを防止する潮止めぜきや，高潮を防ぐことを主眼とする防潮ぜきとは異なるが，河口ぜきに高潮防御の目的をもたせることもある。河口ぜきで新たに水資源を開発し得る理由は，塩害防止などのために確保されている維持用水を新規利水に転換できることにあり，例えば，利根川河口ぜき(1971完成)の場合では，塩害防止や河口維持などのために必要とされていた利根川下流の維持用水50m³/sのうち20m³/sが，東京都，埼玉県，千葉県の水道用水，工業用水に転用された。
