Ikutsu Station - Okitsu Station

...A post town in Suruga Province (Shizuoka Prefecture). It appears as Okitsu in the Engishiki as an ancient post town. To the east is the Okitsu River and Satta Pass, and to the west is Mount Seigenji, a difficult point on the Tokaido road that approaches Suruga Bay. At the foot of Mount Seigenji, a Kiyomi Barrier was established as a safeguard against the passage to Bando. From the Kamakura period onwards, the Okitsu clan, a branch of the Irie clan, ruled as the head of the post town, and from the Muromachi period onwards, the Okitsu clan, who became vassals of the Imagawa clan, established their residence here, and during the Sengoku period, they established a guard station on Mount Satta. In 1601 (Keicho 6), it was designated as a post station on the Tokaido road, and has since developed as a post town. ...

…駿河国(静岡県)の宿場町。古代駅家として《延喜式》に息津（おきつ）と見える。東は興津川･薩埵（さつた）峠，西は清見寺山が駿河湾に迫る東海道の難所，清見寺山下には清見関が設けられ，坂東への備えとした。鎌倉時代以降は入江氏支流の興津氏が宿の長者として支配，室町時代以降今川氏の被官となった興津氏はこの地に居館を構え，戦国期には薩埵山に警護関を置いた。1601年(慶長6)東海道の宿駅に指定され，以後宿場町として発展。…
