A general term for parrots belonging to the Psittacidae family, subfamily Micropsittinae. They are the smallest of the parrots, with a total length of only 8-10cm. Their tail feathers are short and horny, and their feather shafts are hard like those of a woodpecker, so they have the habit of climbing tree trunks and large branches. The name "parakeet" comes from their similar habits to those of a woodpecker. They live in small groups in tropical rainforests, catching insects from between the bark of trees and digging out adult and larval termites from their nests in the trees with their beaks.
