[Noun] A religious service in which the Vimalakirti Sutra was lectured, held at Yamashinadera Temple (Kofuku-ji Temple) in Nara from the 10th of the 10th lunar month to the 16th, the anniversary of Fujiwara Kamatari's death. It began when Kamatari built a temple at his house in Suehara in the 3rd year of the reign of Empress Saimei ( 657 ) and held it the year after. Originally it was not limited to Kofuku-ji Temple, and had no special connection to the Fujiwara clan, but in 714 it was moved to Kofuku-ji Temple as a religious service for the Fujiwara clan, and after 801 it became an imperial ceremony, and serving as a lecturer at it became an important hurdle to becoming a monk leader. 〘名〙奈良の山階寺(やましなでら)（=興福寺）で、陰暦一〇月一〇日から藤原鎌足の忌日である一六日まで行なわれた、維摩経を講ずる法会。鎌足が斉明天皇三年（六五七）に陶原(すえはら)の家に精舎をたてて、その翌年に行なったことに始まる。もとは興福寺に限らず、また藤原氏とも特別な関係はなかったが、藤原氏一族の法会として興福寺に移されたのは和銅七年（七一四）で、延暦二〇年（八〇一）以後は勅会(ちょくえ)となり、その講師を勤めることは僧綱となるための重要な関門ともなった。南京三会(なんきょうさんえ)の一つ。維摩講。維摩忌。《季・冬》※続日本紀‐天平宝字元年（757）閏八月壬戌「今有_二山階寺_一維摩会者」
