Shu Shun-sui

Japanese:
Shu Shun-sui

A Confucian scholar who came from Ming China in the early Edo period. His name was Shuyu, his pen name was Luoyang (it is incorrect to say Soyo), and his pen name Shun-sui was taken from the name of a river in his hometown. He was born to a scholar-official family in Yuyao, Zhejiang Province, China, and served the Ming Dynasty. In an effort to save his country from the threat of destruction, he traveled abroad and made several visits to Nagasaki, where he was exiled for the seventh time in 1659 (Manji 2). The following year, in 1660, he met the Confucian scholar Ando Seian (Morinari) of the Yanagawa Domain, and was treated well by him. A few years later, Tokugawa Mitsukuni, lord of the Mito domain, sent his historian Oyake Seijun (1638-1674) to Nagasaki to invite Shunsui. At first, he did not accept, but with the encouragement of his disciple Shoan, he accepted the invitation and arrived at the Mito domain's Edo residence in July 1665 (Kanbun 5), at the age of 66. After that, he came to Mito twice more, but was given a residence in the Mito domain's middle residence in Komagome, Edo (the site of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Tokyo), and was treated as Mitsukuni's guest teacher until his death on April 17, 2nd year of Tenna, at the age of 83. Asaka Tanpo (whose real name was Satoru), famous for compiling the Dai Nihonshi, was his senior disciple. His grave was built in Confucian style at the Mito family's Zuiryuzan Cemetery (in Hitachiota City) by special order of Mitsukuni. It is known that Shunsui played an important role in the study of the Mito domain. Shunsui's study was somewhere between Neo-Confucianism and Yangmingism, and could be described as practical learning. His posthumous writings are included in the "Shu Shunsui Monshu" (28 volumes), compiled by order of Mitsukuni.
