A researcher of early modern theater and Joruri. Born in Nagano Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Waseda University. At the recommendation of his teacher, Takano Tatsuyuki, he joined the Japanese Music Research Department at the Tokyo Music School, where he devoted himself to researching and investigating popular songs and theater. Between 1912 (Taisho 1) and 1927 (Showa 2), he edited and published the trilogy "Chronology of Early Modern Japanese Music," covering the Tokiwazu Tomimoto Kiyomoto section, the Edo Nagauta section, and the Gidayubushi section. During that time, he taught at the Tokyo Music School, Waseda University, and other institutions, and became a contemporary authority in the study of Joruri popular songs. His books include "Essays on Early Modern Theater," "Chikamatsu Monzaemon," "After Chikamatsu," and "History of Joruri."
