A formula expressing the structure of a flower. For example, the perianth is P, and if the perianth has a distinction between the calyx and the corolla, the calyx is K, the corolla is C, the stamens are A, and the pistil is G, and the number of leaflets that make up the structure is indicated by a number. Usually, the attachment of leaflets is indicated by parentheses, and various symbols may be used to indicate the superior or inferior position of the ovary and other characteristics. In contrast to the floral formula, a floral diagram is a diagram of the cross section of a flower seen from above, in order to clearly show the number and positional relationship of the leaves. The cross section of the ovary is shown to show the number and position of the carpels that compose the pistil. Axillary flowers are drawn with the adaxial side facing up.
