In Chinese Taoist and Taoist thought, this refers to a person who dies and then comes back to life, becoming an immortal in another, distant land. Such immortals are called Shijiexian. There are two types of Shijiexian: one in which the soul leaves the body, leaving behind the corpse, and one in which the corpse comes back to life and escapes from the coffin. In the former case, the corpse does not decay and remains as if it were alive. In Ge Hong's Baopuzi, Shijiexian are placed in a lower position than celestial immortals who ascend to heaven and earth immortals who visit famous mountains. This is because immortals, who are supposed to be immortal, take on the form of death.
