Mountain Skipper - Miyamaseseri

A butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Hesperiidae. In Japan, it is found almost throughout the country, including Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Tsushima, but does not live on Tanegashima, Yakushima, or the southwest islands. Outside of Japan, it is found on the Korean Peninsula, in the Amur region, and in China, and is endemic to East Asia.

The wingspan is about 40 mm. The base colour of the wings is brown, with many small yellow spots on the hind wings. Females have a wide whitish band in the centre of their forewings, but in males this is unclear and there is a thin grey-brown sex mark on the anterior base of the forewing. They emerge once a year, from mid-March to late April in warm regions and from late April to early June in cold regions. The larvae feed on Fagaceae oaks such as Konara, Sawtooth Oak, Mizunara Quercus serrata and Kashiwa. The larvae grow slowly, only reaching maturity in late autumn, dropping to the ground with fallen leaves and spending the winter as larvae before pupating the following spring without eating.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目セセリチョウ科に属するチョウ。日本では北海道、本州、四国、九州、対馬(つしま)などほとんど日本全土に分布するが、種子島(たねがしま)、屋久島(やくしま)および以南の南西諸島には生息しない。国外では朝鮮半島、アムール地方、中国に分布し、東アジアの特産種。

　はねの開張は40ミリ内外。はねの地色は茶褐色、後翅には多くの小黄斑(おうはん)がある。雌は前翅の中央に帯白色の幅広いバンドがあるが、雄では不明瞭(ふめいりょう)で前翅の前縁基半に灰褐色の細い性標がある。年1回の発生、暖地では3月中旬から4月下旬、寒冷地では4月下旬から6月上旬に出現する。幼虫の食草はブナ科のコナラ、クヌギ、ミズナラ、カシワなど。幼虫の成長は遅く、晩秋になってからようやく老熟し、落葉とともに地上に落ち、幼虫の状態で冬を越し、翌春そのまま食をとることなく蛹(さなぎ)となる。
