A ctenophore of the Cucurbitidae family of the class Tentacleata (illustration). It is found throughout Japan, but is particularly abundant in cold seas. Its body is made of agar and shaped like a melon. Large individuals grow to about 20 cm in height. Its entire body is pale pink in color. It has no tentacles. Its very large mouth opens at the bottom, and it turns over to swallow other jellyfish and small crustaceans. Numerous branch tubes emerge from the meridian duct located inside the eight ctenophores, which fuse in various places to form a mesh-like structure. However, there is almost no communication between these branch tubes and the oral duct.

無触手綱ウリクラゲ科の有櫛（ゆうしつ）動物（イラスト）。日本各地に分布するが，とくに寒海に多産する。体は寒天質でウリのような形をしている。大きな個体では高さ20cmほどになる。全体は淡紅色を帯びる。触手はない。下部に開く口は非常に大きく，これを反転して他のクラゲ類や小型甲殻類などをのみ込む。8本の櫛板（しつばん）の内側にある子午水管から多数の枝管がで，これらが各所で融合して網目状になっている。しかし，これらの枝管と口道水管との間にはほとんど連絡がない。
