Lindernia crustacea (L.) F.Muell.
A weed that grows in slightly humid places such as fields and gardens, it is an annual plant of the Scrophulariaceae family (illustration). It produces pale purple, labiata flowers from summer to autumn. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the fruit resembles a gourd. The stem branches sparsely and spreads out, reaching a length of 10-20 cm. The leaves have short stalks, are ovate, not very pointed at the tip, 7-20 mm long, 6-13 mm wide, and have coarse serrations. A single flower is produced on a thin stalk extending from the side of the upper leaf. The calyx is tubular with five short lobes at the tip and five ridges. The corolla is about 7 mm long.
