Dried sardine wholesaler - Hoshikadonya

Japanese:
Dried sardine wholesaler - Hoshikadonya
In the Edo period, this was a wholesaler that dealt in dried sardines for fish fertilizer. In addition to dried sardines, they also traded fish cakes and herring meal, but as cotton cultivation spread in the Kinai region, the demand for fish fertilizer increased, and in 1624, a dried sardine landing site was opened at Eitaihama in Osaka, and dried sardine wholesalers began to live in Utsubo Island. In 1653, they formed a group and developed new fishing grounds by lending funds to fishing bosses in Shikoku and Kyushu, while also promoting cotton cultivation and developing sales channels in areas cultivated with rapeseed, indigo, and fruit. Dried sardines from the Boso Peninsula were handled by a dried sardine wholesaler in Uraga, but later a dried sardine wholesaler in Edo set up a landing site in Fukagawa and received official recognition from the Stock Association in 1739. During the late Edo period, herring fertilizer, known as Matsumae products, began to be sold in large quantities.
