[Died] July 23, 1856. Arnau. German Prussian politician. Influenced by Kant as a student and by the liberal and rationalist ideas of A. Smith, he became convinced that liberal reforms were the basis for the prosperity of Prussia. From 1806, he actively cooperated with the reforms of K. Stein and C. Hartenberg in East Prussia. In 1816, he became Governor of West Prussia, and from 1824 to 1842, he governed all of Prussia as Minister of State, and was active as a defender of freedom of education, speech, and the press, as well as constitutionalism.
