Cossack leader and conqueror of Siberia. He was a Don Cossack. The Stroganov family, wealthy merchants who were granted permission by Ivan IV to manage the Ob River basin, sent a Cossack force of over 1,600 men led by Yermak to the Urals (1579, some say 1581). His troops advanced across the Urals and reached the mouth of the Tobol River. After three days of fierce fighting, they defeated the large army of Kuchum Khan of the Sibir Khanate, who was powerful in the region, and occupied the Khanate's capital, Sibir (also known as Kashlyk) (1582). However, the Khan still had power, and on August 6, 1585, he surprised the Cossack forces. He was defeated and drowned at the mouth of the Bagas River while camping with a small force. He became a legendary hero and the protagonist of folk songs.
