Urigou ruins

Japanese:
Urigou ruins
<br /> The remains of a settlement in Yorimichi, Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture. Located in the alluvial marshland downstream of the Toyokawa River called Urigō, on a sandbar from that time, Yayoi pottery showing five styles exists in multiple layers. It is an important marshland site comparable to the Karako site in Nara Prefecture and the Toro site in Shizuoka Prefecture. No traces of rice paddies have been found, but there are remains of dwellings with rounded corners and rectangular or oval floors, and there is also a shell mound. The remains of the dwelling are not of the pit dwellings commonly seen in the Yayoi period, but of a flatland dwelling. It is thought that pit dwellings could not be dug due to the low marshland, and the site is oval-shaped with a long diameter of 5.5m and a short diameter of 3.6m, and has two post holes. Many remains, including pottery, stone tools, and bone and horn tools, have been discovered, and various wooden agricultural tools have also been excavated, showing the characteristics of a lowland site. The area was designated a national historic site in 1953 (Showa 28) due to the continuous existence of settlements from the middle to late Yayoi period, shell mounds, and the valuable evidence of fishing and hunting in addition to farming. It is about a 13-minute walk from Shimoji Station on the JR Iida Line.
