Scopas - Skopas (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek sculptor. Along with Praxiteles and Lysippos, he is one of the most famous sculptors of the 4th century BC. Born on the island of Paros. His father, Aristandros, was a bronze sculptor. He went to Athens around 377 BC, and produced works throughout Attica, the Peloponnese, and Asia Minor. While Praxiteles established an elegant style for the gods, Aristandros excelled in expressing the inner emotions of humans, and was a pioneer of Hellenistic sculpture. Works believed to be his based on ancient documents and their style include the pediment sculptures and statues of Asclepius and Hygeia of the Temple of Athena Alea in Tegea (National Archaeological Museum, Athens), the reliefs on the colonnade of the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, and the reliefs on the eastern frieze of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (British Museum). In both figures, his distinctive features can be seen in the deeply carved eyes and the depiction of the folds in the clothing.
