An island in the western Pacific Ocean, west of the Caroline Islands. It consists of four islands and about 130 barrier reefs surrounding them. The main product is copra. The inhabitants are Yapese people who speak an Austronesian language and engage in fishing and tuber cultivation. Ceremonial exchanges are carried out using stone and shell money. After being a German territory, a Japanese mandate territory, and a United Nations trust territory administered by the United States, it gained independence in 1986 as part of the Federated States of Micronesia. It covers an area of 119 km2 .
