...During the Middle Ages, dyed leather was mainly used for armor, and leather with various patterns such as eye knots, five stars, irises, small cherry blossoms, the Fudo Triad, lions and peonies, and mandarin ducks were made. Among these dyed leathers, indigo leather and small cherry blossom leather were used for dignified fur, five-star leather for small borders, iris leather for decorative panels, and painted leather for string running and for leather coverings for metal fittings. The patterns of illustrated leather changed over time; from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period, tasukiiri (traditional Japanese sash pattern) kamon and lion and circle patterns were used, while in the Kamakura period, tasuki patterns were replaced by pictorial patterns such as lion and peony patterns, chrysanthemum branch patterns, and Fudo Sanzon patterns. After the Northern and Southern Courts period, the lion and peony patterns became smaller and more formalized, resulting in the creation of moshishi leather, and Shohei leather dyed with the date 1351 (Shohei 6). *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Five Star Wealth" are listed below.
