...However, most of this genus, which has a total of 150 to 200 species, mainly found in the tropics, are climbing plants. The genus Pterocarpus is sometimes given to rosewood, but this is incorrect. The kouki or rosewood, a type of Chinese wood used for shamisen necks, is the wood of the Indian legume Pterocarpus santalinus L., and is sometimes included in the broader definition of rosewood.
